The PA House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote on two important pro-gun pieces of legislation up for a vote next week on January 24

House Bill 1668 is meant to address the weaknesses in Pennsylvania law regarding the transportation of firearms and the criteria for which has created many hardships for Pennsylvania gunowners.

This bill was introduced by Rep. Tim Krieger who is to be commended for his willingness to take on this thorny social issue and try to resolve some of the mistakes that continue to plague citizens across this Commonwealth!

FOAC will grade a vote in support of this legislation as pro-gun. We encourage all gunowners to take a long look at this and consider contacting their representatives!

House Bill 1523 was introduced by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe to address the issues that continue to result in violations of Pennsylvania’s preemption law that prohibits local communities from enacting their own gun laws. Since there appears to be an unwillingness by the district attorney's in the counties where these flagrant violations are occurring to hold accountable these local communities criminally as is provided for in the law, this legislation provides for the option to hold these communities and those who enact the laws civilly responsible by imposing financial penalties.

Representative Daryl Metcalfe is to be commended for doggedly pursuing these local communities flagrant violations of the law and attempting to institute an appropriate remedial action option.

FOAC will grade a vote in support of this legislation as pro-gun! We encourage all gunowners to take a long look at this legislation as well and consider contacting their representatives!

Homicide no longer among leading death causes

By Dave Workman, Seattle Gun Rights Examiner

A blockbuster revelation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reported by both the Seattle Times and Tacoma News Tribune, shows that homicide is no longer among the top 15 causes of death in the United States, during a period when firearm ownership and concealed carry is increasing.

This poses a dilemma for gun prohibitionists at Washington CeaseFire, the Violence Policy Center and Brady Campaign. Of course, all three include firearm-related deaths from suicide and accidents (both still in the Top 10) as “gun violence,” but that may be a bit misleading. It depends upon one’s personal and political perspective.

Gun rights activists are already discussing the news, which broke Wednesday, on the GunRightsMedia forum. And Larry Keane, vice president and general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, had this to say:

"This statistic simply serves to further demonstrate that the lawful possession and use of firearms by law abiding Americans whom have chosen to exercise their fundamental constitutional right to keep and bear arms that is protected by Second Amendment does not cause crime. In fact, as firearms ownership increases and there have never been more firearms in civilian possession in the history of the United States, crime including homicide continues to decline throughout the country."—Lawrence Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel

For everyone’s edification, here are the top 15 causes of death in the United States during 2010, listed by the CDC:

1. Heart disease

2. Cancer

3. Chronic lower respiratory diseases

4. Stroke/disease of blood vessels in the brain

5. Accidents

6. Alzheimer's disease

7. Diabetes

8. Kidney disease

9. Flu and pneumonia

10. Suicide

11. Septicemia (blood infections)

12. Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis

13. High blood pressure

14. Parkinson's disease

15. Pneumonitis

Federal official in Arizona to plead the fifth and not answer questions on 'furious' PDF Print E-mail

The chief of the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona is refusing to testify before Congress regarding Operation Fast and Furious, the federal gun-running scandal that sent U.S. weapons to Mexico.

Patrick J. Cunningham informed the House Oversight Committee late Thursday through his attorney that he will use the Fifth Amendment protection.

Cunningham was ordered Wednesday to appear before Chairman Darrell Issa and the House Oversight Committee regarding his role in the operation that sent more than 2,000 guns to the Sinaloa Cartel. Guns from the failed operation were found at the murder scene of Border Agent Brian Terry.

The letter from Cunningham’s Washington DC attorney stunned congressional staff. Last week, Cunningham, the second highest ranking U.S. Attorney in Arizona, was scheduled to appear before Issa‘s committee voluntarily. Then, he declined and Issa issued a subpoena.

Cunningham is represented by Tobin Romero of Williams and Connolly who is a specialist in white collar crime. In the letter, he suggests witnesses from the Department of Justice in Washington, who have spoken in support of Attorney General Eric Holder, are wrong or lying.

“Department of Justice officials have reported to the Committee that my client relayed inaccurate information to the Department upon which it relied in preparing its initial response to Congress. If, as you claim, Department officials have blamed my client, they have blamed him unfairly,” the letter to Issa says.
